Jelly beans

jelly beans

the humble jelly bean
No one actually knows where jelly beans originally came from, tales are told that they are the natural evolution of the then popular Turkish Delight “a citrus, honey and rose water jelly” back in the mid 1800s.

The penny candy obsession developed in America during the late 1800's, where candy makers began experimenting with delicate sugar candies. The jelly candy inspired by Turkish delight was shaped into a bean and was developed with a soft shell using a French process called "panning". The first jelly bean was created by an American candy maker whose name has since been lost in time.
Jelly beans earned an increase in popularity as an Easter Candy in the 1930s because they look like mini Easter eggs.
Since this early period many confectionery companies have created different sizes and flavours. Now you can find them in almost any flavour!
They have come a long way since those early days.
Some of the following you may have come across:-

The Jelly Bean Factory®, Gimbal’s®, Weenie Beanies® Haribo®, Parrs®, Russell Stover®, Brach’s®, Jelly Belly®, Starburst Tropical Joosters®, Jolly Rancher® ,Teenee Beanee® and many more!

national jelly bean day
Because there are so many jelly bean lovers a special day was formed, National Jelly Bean Day has not been made official, it isn’t a real holiday, but it is a day to celebrate, relax, have fun and enjoy these sweets with a touch of nostalgia.
So what day do jelly bean lovers celebrate?
National Jelly Bean Day is celebrated on April 22 each year and jelly bean lovers say this is the perfect excuse to feast once again on jelly beans. It has been reported that jelly bean lovers grab them by the handful, others fill them by the bowl full and nibble all day, passing them onto friends and family. The numbers of jelly bean lovers grows rapidly on this day as people every where are picking out favourite flavours one-by-one or singling out favourite colours and eating them by the handful but all in all it is reported that everyone agrees that jelly beans are just plain fun!

jelly bean prayer

Yes, jelly beans have even got their own prayer.
Red is for the blood he gave,
Green is for the grass he made,
Yellow is for the sun so bright,
Orange is for the edge of night,
Black is for the sins that were made,
White is for the grace he gave,
Purple is for his hours of sorrow,
Pink is for our new tomorrow.
A bag full of jelly beans colourful and sweet,
is a prayer, is a promise, is a very special treat.
